1

Does everyone get a bid?

The purpose of the recruitment process is to allow you and the chapters to decide on the best fit. The reality is that not everybody who goes through recruitment finds a match, but every effort is made to provide opportunities for involvement to any young woman who is interested in the sorority experience.

2

I'm older than a freshmen, can I still join?

Yes! Absolutely! Because Oakland University has so many transfer students and has many commuter students, it is very common for "older" women to go through recruitment.

3

How will I know which chapter is right for me?

In order to choose a chapter that is right for you, you should participate in recruitment, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet members of all chapters on campus. The recruitment process will allow you and the chapters to decide on the best it. As you go through the process, be sure to keep an open mind, ask questions, take notes after each round to remember your conversations and be yourself!

4

I'm an M2O or O2O student, can I still join?

In order to go through recruitment you just need to be taking at least one class at Oakland University! If you are dual enrolled with another university or community college, you are still eligible to join a sorority.

5

What are the financial obligations like?

Finances vary in every single chapter. At OU the average cost per semester is anywhere between $200 and $500. However, much like joining any sporting team, your first semester will be the most expensive so that you can buy the necessary "equipment". Don't let finances hold you back, many chapters offer payment plans for you to pay over time. Make sure you ask about finances during recruitment if you are concerned!

6

What if I discover the sorority I’ve selected is the wrong one for me?

Once you’ve accepted a bid to a sorority, the new member process is designed to make sure you are ready to make a life-long commitment to an organization. This period normally lasts 6-8 weeks but depends on your organization. If before initiation you decide that you are not ready for the commitment, you can break your pledge from the organization. If you would like to participate in recruitment again, you can do so at the time of the next primary recruitment period. Once you have accepted a bid from an NPC organization, you must wait until the next primary recruitment period to be eligible to receive another bid from an NPC organization.
If you truly think that the sorority to which you received a bid is the wrong group for you, you should make that decision before you are initiated. Once you are initiated into an NPC organization, you are ineligible for membership in any other NPC organization for the rest of your life. Going through initiation is a way to show that you are ready for a life-long commitment to your group.

7

Do I have to live in the house?

No, the houses at Oakland university fit anywhere from 5-7 women. You will never be forced to live in the house but you may choose to live in it if an opening is available.

8

What happens if I have to miss a round of recruitment?

If you have a legitimate excuse like a wedding, class, illness, or emergency you can miss up to one night of recruitment. However, if you miss preference night you will be ineligible to join any sorority. If you do need to miss a night for any reason, please contact the Vice President of Recruitment with your reason why you can not attend.

9

Do I have to go back to a sorority I do not like?

Yes, according to the NPC national rules you must attend all rounds of recruitment that you have been invited to. This is so you get to meet as many different sorority women as possible. Try not to make a quick judgement, sometimes going back the next day will change your mind.

10

What happens if I do not get an invitation? â€‹

Unfortunately some women who participate in recruitment do not receive invitations. However, this is very rare. The best thing to do to avoid this is to talk to plenty of members during recruitment and make a lasting memory. This will maximize your possibility of getting an invitation.
